MADRID - In fact, many people already know it, but the research of the tix.nl website has confirmed it once again. Spain is for the 60+ Dutch people the most popular destination to visit in the winter. According to the website, especially the Alicante region with the famous Costa Blanca is very popular but other destinations such as Lanzarote, Tenerife and Málaga also do well to the over-60s.
Alicante seems to be a real seniors destination for the Dutch elderly in the winter months. No less than 20% of passengers aged 60 or older who booked flight tickets via tix.nl did so to Alicante airport. Then the elderly go to the famous seaside resorts such as Benidorm, Calpe, Gandia, Denia, Javea or Vila Joiosa to enjoy the nice weather and beautiful surroundings.
Outside the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, destinations around Málaga airport on the Costa del Sol are also very popular among Dutch elderly people. Just like the Canary Islands Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote where it looks like summer in the winter because of the constant nice temperature.
Least popular
Of course there are also destinations in Spain that are not so popular for the sixties during the winter months. The list of tix.nl includes the island of Ibiza, the Guggenheim city of Bilbao and the city of Valencia where the least is flown by the Dutch elderly. These destinations are popular during the summer months.
Outside of Spain
When looking at destinations that are not in Spain, the Dutch elderly also fly a lot to the south of Portugal with the airport Faro or airports in the South of France such as Toulouse or Clermont-Ferrand and Carcassonne.
Looking further away is noticeable that many Dutch people over sixty are flying to Bangkok, Cape Town or Denpasar in Bali to escape the cold temperatures in their own country. Especially Baliis has become very popular with the Dutch elderly in recent years since 22% of all travelers to Denpasar are 60 years or older
